The coronavirus pandemic has created the largest employment crisis in a century and it is time for Congress and the president to start putting people back to work by making large-scale infrastructure investments with strong Buy America rules to support American jobs. There is a demonstrated need for massive investment in our public infrastructure. America’s bridges, water systems, broadband internet, schools, and other modes of critical infrastructure were crumbling even before the coronavirus began. The current health and economic crisis only reinforce the need to make massive investments in the infrastructure that we all rely on in our daily lives. The debate over how to finance these investments is less important today because low interest rates means that borrowing is less expensive than ever before. And, investments in infrastructure with strong Buy America rules have a far higher long-term return to our economy and create more jobs than other spending programs currently being implemented to respond to the crisis. It is time for congress and the president to express confidence in U.S. manufacturers and American workers by requiring that our infrastructure spending adhere to strong Buy America rules. Our 21st century infrastructure should be Made in America, not in China.
